Our elementary schools currently serve grades PK-6 and are nearing capacity. Additional spaces are needed to provide more 4-year-old kindergarten (4K) programming on-site. Currently, the district contracts with private organizations to provide 4K programming off-site. To meet this need, the district recommends moving all 6th-grade students to the middle school, which would not only free up space at each elementary school but also provide 6th-grade students with access to upper-level middle school curriculum such as career and technical education, advanced math, foreign language, and band/orchestra/choir.
Another elementary school challenge is the parking lot and traffic flow at Big Bend Elementary. The current configuration is causing safety concerns due to congestion. Reconfiguration of the bus and parent pick-up/drop-off areas is needed to better separate students and vehicles and reduce backups on Highway 164.
