Hello, and Welcome to my web page. My name is Mark Montanye and I am in my sixteenth year teaching here at Mukwonago High School. I earned my undergraduate degree from University of Wisconsin-Whitewater and earned my master's degree in Curriculum and Instruction from National-Louis University. Here at the High School you will find me working on different projects from the three courses I teach (American Government, World Geography and AP Human Geography) as well as working with students and staff with the Global Scholars program.
AP Human Geography is available to students through all grade levels. Throughout the year students will be preparing for the AP exam that is administered in May, so they are able to earn college credit for their time and effort in this course. Human Geography works to get students thinking spatially. It asks why something is located where it is and understand the impact of those features on the site and situation where they are located. Or ask the question "Why did this happen here?" To do this students will be working with geographic tools to analyze; population patterns, migrations, the cultural landscape around the world, land use patterns, advancements in agriculture, political systems, development of urban areas, service, industry and manufacturing societies as well as the future of geography.
American Government is primarily a 9th grade course that will analyze not only the functions of our government but also our economic system, policies and political interaction throughout our country and the world. We will have a strong focus on different study and learning skills that will help our students throughout their four years here at the high school and beyond. I stress not only the importance of knowing the functions of our government & economic system but also being fully aware of current events, so we are able to act as responsible and informed citizens.
World Geography is a one semester course that is open to all grade levels. World Geography is a regional geography course that will study various regions of the world. In the past we have focused on Europe, Russia, Central Asia, Africa and Latin America. This year we will be focusing on Europe, Sub Saharan Africa and Latin America. Students will also work on a project that will allow them to learn about any other country in the world within or outside the regions we will be studying as a class. Studying the world regionally has allowed students to study a blend of physical geography as well as an introduction to some human geography concepts as well.
