Homework Schedule
2nd graders are allotted 20-30 min. of homework/night. I try my best not to send homework home on Fridays. However, there are rare occasions that this may happen.
Please read each section for my homework schedule/policies.
Reading:
Guided Reading- Your child will meet with their reading teacher a few times each week. In reading group we will be using Super Magazines which are exciting, motivating articles related the a specific theme. This will happen for 2 weeks. The next 2 weeks will be spent reading fiction chapter books. You will most likely see these coming home as it is very difficult to finish these books in 2 short weeks without required home reading.
Anthology- Depending on your child's reading class placememnt they may bring home their Superkid reading book to re-read the short story from the day.
Fluency pages and backpack pages Your child will bring home a weekly fluency page which is to be read nightly. Backpack pages are spelling homework practice pages.
Math:
With every new unit your child will receive a math packet of home links. Please have your child do ONLY the assigned page for that night (ex: 1.5 or 1.8). These coincide with our daily lessons and are extra review. They should not go ahead. This packet will then stay in their home folder until the unit is complete. At the beginning of each packet is information for the parent(s) on what will be learned as well as answers to your child’s homework. Math homework is NOT graded but will be checked. When the packet is completely finished, they will then be asked to turn it in. These home links should not take more than 10 minutes! If you and your child are struggling, please write a note in their assignment notebook.
Every night your child should be practicing their math facts. You will receive a math fact folder to use as a guide. There are 4 time tests that should be passed by the end of the year (addition to 10 and 20, and subtraction to 10 and 20). You can see how they are doing by looking at their time test score which comes home on Tuesdays. Students usually know what level they are on also.
Spelling:
Every Monday your child should be bringing home a spelling list. There will also be backpack pages that will come home almost nightly to practice their words.
Every Friday students will take a spelling test. Grades are not solely based on spelling tests. Your child must also be able to transfer the learned spelling words correctly in their writing.
Assignment notebooks:
Your child will receive an assignment notebook. I truly believe that organization is a key skill to success. Daily, students will write their homework down in their assignment notebook. Please check and sign the assignment notebook nightly once the work is complete. This is also a great place to write me notes instead of on paper which can easily get lost. I will check for parent signatures each morning.
It is your responsibility to check their home folders and sign the assignment notebook nightly. If your child is not bringing these things home please remind them in their notebooks and let me know so I can help them to remember.
