Scholastic Book Fair

A big shout-out to the volunteers, students, families, teachers and school staff who helped make our spring Book Fair Fiesta fun and profitable! Because the book fair coincided with Parent Lunch Week, we had lots of shoppers browsing the fair during lunch times. It was rewarding to see the students' excitement as they paged through all the new books! Thanks to generous shoppers, our sales for the week totaled nearly $9,000! This earned our school $5,800 in Scholastic Dollars, which Mrs. Bretza can use to purchase books, magazines, furniture, technology or other supplies our library needs. The Book Fair Committee appreciates all your efforts to make reading fun for our students and to help grow our library resources!

    Scholastics' President's Award

Big Bend Elementary earns award for increased participation in All for Books! BBES is proud to be one of 13 schools recognized in Scholastic Book Fair’sFall 2013 Elementary National Contest! The school won a President’s Award for ExceptionalPerformance in the category “What Would You Do for Reading?” The prize is 500 Scholastic Dollars. BBES tied the “What Would You Do for Reading?” program into its All for Books campaign during itsScholastic Book Fair held in October. Principal Shawn Waller promised to dance to the song “WalkLike an Egyptian” by the Bangles if students collected more than $800 for All for Books.Donations to All for Books provide new books for the school’s library, plus Scholastic matches the amount with a donation of books to two national non-profit organizations dedicated to helping kidsand families in need. When BBES students more than doubled the goal and collected $2,150.80 for All for Books, Wallerasked staff members to join him in costume, and they also danced to Steve Martin’s “King Tut.” Atan all-school assembly, the kids went wild when Mr. Waller added “the worm” to his dance moves!“It is amazing how much we can accomplish when we all have a common goal, which is to promote and celebrate student learning in a fun environment,” said Mr. Waller.“What a wonderful example of the success that can be created through the efforts of many people,”added Becky Bretza, Library Technology Specialist. The library will be purchasing some fun seats with the500 Scholastic Dollars. The Book Fair Committee thanks BBES’ enthusiastic students, helpful Student Council, great staff, hardworking PTO and generous volunteers for promoting the book fair and making reading fun.
