Book Fair

The book fair is held twice a school year in conjunction with Grandparent and Parent lunch weeks. Profits from each fair are used to purchase books and materials for the library that all students will have access to. On occassion the profits will also be used for author assemblies.

Family Reading Night

Families are invited back to school to enjoy a night of theme based stories and activities. Students in grades EC-2 will rotate through 3 different stories, students in grades 4-6 have the opportunity to take part in an interactive reading adventure, and students in grade 3 may choose the traditional format (3 stories) or the interactive.

Holiday Shop

Usually the second week of December, our Big Bend Holiday Shop opens up for students to purchase gifts for family and friends.

Jump Rope for Heart

Students are invited to participate in Jump Rope for Heart every February to raise money to fight cardiovascular disease, heart attacks, and strokes, while working to develop their jump roping skills. Click here for additional information regarding this event organized by the American Heart Association.

Mitten Tree

Every December our 4th grade students organize a school-wide collection of mittens, hats, and scarves for those in need. The students count and organize the items collected.

One School, One Book

As a school, we all read the same book and take part in activities based on the readings. Title is announced at an all-school assembly near the end of January.

Red Ribbon Week

Takes place in the month of October and is run in support of the National Red Ribbon Week campaign. This is a week where students pledge to be Drug Free.

School Speech Contest

Students in 5th and 6th grade take part in researching and writing a speech on a speficied topic. Speeches are first heard in the classrooms where winners are selected to participate at a building level contest. The top two finishers will move onto the district level competition.

Senior Salute

In May, graduating high school seniors that attended Big Bend Elementary in the past are invited back to celebrate their upcoming high school graduation and share their future plans with the staff. This is an exciting event for both the students and the staff.

Spelling Bee

Every fall, we participate in the National Spelling Bee sponsered by the E.W. Scripps Company and other sponsers. It begins in the classroom with classroom competitions and moves on to building and district level competitions, state, and all the way to the National Competition.

Sports Day

Students participate in a variety of Trach and Field events: sprints, relays, distance, and field events. The event is normally held in May.

Student/Staff Basketball Game

We host a 6th grade and staff basketball game every spring. This is a very exciting event that our 6th graders look forward to each school year.
